In olden days there were very few cities and they were far from each other. Majority of people lived in villages or small townships. Auspicious time for sowing, house construction/repairs, digging a well, purchase of cattle for milk, meeting a minister or any other VIP, etc are fixed with the help of village astrologers.
In the beginning of the year there would be a Panchang reading in a Village temple to know how that year would be on the whole for various groups of people like, Farmers, Artisans, Merchants, politicians, priest hood etc. The quantum of rain fall is also predicted. Besides most of the villagers seek advice of an astrologer on their personal problems. Marriage matching and fixing of auspicious Muhurta is also done through astrology. Temple renovations are also undertaken under astrological guidance.
I for one find village astrologers to be extremely well versed in the art of Vedic astrology. Most of the village astrologers make a complicated horoscope by hand and that too within minutes, which in the cities is done by the help of the computer.
