This is the most difficult aspect of a horoscope for very many reasons. Firstly one individual naturally plays very many roles in a society. He is a son, he is the husband, he is the brother, he is the father, uncle, nephew and so many others. So also is his job or profession in the society. Let us take the example of one of the greatest saints of India in the 19th century. His name was Sri Shyama Charan Lahiri.
He was born in a Bengali family which migrated to Varanasi for survival. He was a good young man who was a good student and obedient son. He married at a very early age and became a good Husband. He joined as a clerk in the Military engineering services of the British East India company. He was promoted as head clerk for his good work. He was transferred to many places. Once he was transferred to Ranikhet in the foot hills of Himalayas. There he met his old Guru Mahavatar babji and was initiated once again in the present incarnation. He was told to continue his official duties, house holders duties and also do social service while practicing yoga of the highest form.
Lahiri Mahashaya had two sons and three daughters .He married all of them, purchased a house in Benares and permanently settled there. He was a prominent member of Bengali society taking part in all its activities. He was secretary of the Bengali school, he was also a teacher to the king and prince of Benares. He initiated many people into the great Kriya yoga,
He wrote many books some of them original and some of them commentaries on most difficult ancient treatises. Last of all he was the supreme yogi like of whom are born in India once in a blue moon.
What does his Horoscope show for a profession? It is the horoscope which has sanyasa raja yoga of the highest type. How does it account for his other roles? This is where the ancient Vedic seers come out. They classified a life into different dasa sections and a person acts his different parts in different periods of life. This also depends on the kind of culture, civilization and the society in which he is born.
There are so many thousands of occupations which many of us have not even heard of.
So how do we know of the profession of a person ? Broad Guide lines have been given by Dr B.V Raman, the great Indian astrologer who classified occupations as a) intellectual, b) aesthetic, c) economic related d) trade related e) electrical and mechanical f) computer related g) government jobs and political careers h) others of mundane type.
The ‘10th house of profession’ in a horoscope and the planets associated with it are enough to indicate the career destiny of a person.
The skill and time of astrologers are put to test each time they pick up a horoscope, so if people indicate their actual work way before the astrology consultation, a lot of time will be saved and guiding them further will be easier for the astrologer.
