For a man and woman to live together happily as husband and wife there should be ideal compatibility between them. The Vedic seers had very good understanding of the requirements for the ideal relationship between husband and wife. Animals also perform the sexual act and they too have foreplay before sex. They too give birth to children and care for them up to a certain time .They also make homes, feed the young ones by going out and searching the food, they also care for the safety of their young ones. If animals can do all this without horoscope matching what is the need for man to match horoscopes of boy and girl to see the compatibility?  

This is because man lives in a society and he has made the social code of conduct. This code of conduct is not to be violated. If any one does he suffers the consequences for that.

To quote some examples –

Unmarried single mothers are not accepted as respectable.
Prostitutes are not a general part of the society.
Men cannot marry as many women as they want...
Act of sex is not to be performed publicly.
Men cannot fight and kill as they please or to establish their superiority.

Both sexes are required to abide by all these codes and set an example to other younger members of the society.

Obviously it becomes essential that both husband and wife should be well brought up, well behaved, well educated, having good means of earning, should have good nature and temperament, capable of producing children and taking care of them and taking the responsibility of making them good law abiding citizens.

The Vedic seers found out that the Zodiacal signs and the planets which traverse them have many special qualities.

They tabulated these into to tables called the ‘GRAHA SEELA PATAKA’ AND ‘RASI SEELA PATHAKA’.  These Tables can be found in the Hindu Panchang. The 27 stars have also their quality for each quarter.  Combining the qualities of sign, planet and star a group of 45 items were prepared which helps to measure the sexual compatibility between the couple
Minimum of 50% was declared as passable but 75 to 90 % is desirable in a horoscope.

Individual horoscopes have their blemishes indicated by malefic planets. These have to be neutralized for the couple to be healthy and enjoy life fully. So a table of Blemish % is also given in Panchang for balancing. 

The dasa system is unique to Vedic astrology. The Starting and ending sub periods of maha dasas are inauspicious hence it is to be ensured that the Maha dasas in the chart of the couple do not start within 6 months of each other so that both will not suffer at the same time.
