Saturn is the most important planet in a Vedic horoscope. He is known as Manda or slow mover as he takes 30 years to complete one round of the zodiac as against that of Moon which makes one round of zodiac in 29 days. Secondly Saturn has direct as well as retrograde motion. Capricorn and Aquarius are the two signs owned by Saturn. Aquarius is his Moola trikona house hence he is as good as exalted in it. Saturn attains full exaltation at 20 degree Libra and full debilitation at 20 degree Aries.

Saturn has natural friendship with Mercury, Venus and Rahu and he is bitter enemy of Sun, Moon, Mars and Ketu with Jupiter he is neutral.

His temporary positional friendship or enmity changes his relations with other planets. He is combust within 15 degree of Sun. When he transits the natal position of his own and that of other malefic like Mars, Raahu and Kaytu and also that of Sun his bitter enemy he gives adverse effects.  Besides there are Elarata of Saturn in which the Saturn transits on the 12th 1st and 2nd sign from natal Moon (which is full Elarata of 7-1/2 years approximately). Saturn transit in 4th and 8th houses is also the shorter Elarata. These are high tension periods in the life of the native and may even reduce a person to the state of pauper.
