Indian Vedic astrology is astounding. It has a unique feature called Dasa systems. There are various dasa systems which require several years of study and practice to attain mastery over them. Original astrology book was written by sage Parasara father of the great Veda Vyasa the author of the Epic Maha Bharata...
Later sage Jaimini incorporated many dasas to the already existing Vimsottari and Ashtottari dasa systems. Each dasa system is unique in its own way. Scholars like Dr K.N Rao have done a lot of research on Jaimini dasa systems and written books to help the students of Vedic astrology.
An astrologer should have a sharp memory and fast thinking power to co-ordinate the systems to get a clear picture of the future events.
Vimsottari is the most commonly used dasa system for timing of events in a horoscope. Normally the dasas are computed from the Moon’s position at birth. There are variations in this also. Computation can be done from birth star, or 4th star/5th star/7th star from it. The astrologer has to test which applies best to a particular Horoscope.
The events are already etched in the Horoscope. The Astrologer has to understand them and work out the materialization time for them. The most commonly sought out timings are those of Marriage, Child birth, Divorce, Job, Business, Visa, Cure from diseases, travel or residing abroad
How does an astrologer time an event? First he has to look for the possibility of the event in the Horoscope. For eg a question like when will I get married?
It has to be seen first whether the person will get married at all. If the answer is yes then check whether it will be an early or late marriage and then check the nearest Jupiter transit which can indicate the event. There are many guidelines in astrological texts and to quote one: “On the day of the marriage Jupiter must aspect any one of the following in direct/retrograde motion
The 10th house from ascendant and the 10th lord
The 10th house from moon and its lord
The 10th houses from ascendant and the Moon
The 10th house from the ascendant and the 10th lord from Moon
The 10th house from the Moon and the 10th lord from the ascendant
The 10th lords from both ascendant and the Moon.
Similar parameters can be applied to Saturn for knowing the bad periods
Besides there is a friendship and enmity chart of the planets in a horoscope. In all dasa systems there are maha dasas (major periods) Antar dasas(sub period) and pratyantara dasas (sub-sub period) and we can g up to Sookshma or (pinpointed date) for happening of an event.
When the Lords of all periods are friendly to each other happy event takes place, when they are otherwise a sad or difficult event takes place.
It should be remembered that the ayanamsa difference causes difference in dates of dasas. This can be reconciled by crosschecking and adjusting the dates of one or two events which have already happened in the life of the individual.
