When we come to transit of planets in Vedic astrology then surfaces the dispute between Sayana and Nirayana systems. Sayana transits are the position of planets in the zodiacal belt as they are seen at the time of observation and Nirayana position are the position of planets re-fixed in the zodiac in its position before the shift began, by deducting the degrees of shift from the current position. (SHIFT IS CALLED AYANAM IN SANSKRIT). So Nirayana means without the shift.
This has been mentioned because western astrologers mark planets according to Sayana method.
The sun may be in cancer 15 degrees in Sayana horoscope but will be shown approximately at 22 degrees of Gemini in a Nirayana horoscope. Similarly there is possibility of change of placements for all the 9 planets. Thus we can draw two totally different observations on the same horoscope one Sayana and the other Nirayana.
India experimented with both the systems and found that results arrived by Nirayana casting is more accurate than that of Sayana Horoscopes. Nirayana system has been recommended for casting and reading horoscopes.
General planetary effects of transit of planet from Moon sign are tabulated in the Indian Ephemeris and anyone can note it down for any day and make a summary for himself. This is based on the relation of sign lord with that of transiting planet. This is most generalized effect.
To know the correct transit effects of planets for a specific horoscope whole lot of factors have to be taken into consideration.
There are different methods for estimating the strength of a planet in a horoscope. The most commonly used are the shadbala and saptavargaja bala. To know these strengths and to work them out one has to study the book “Graha and Bhava bala” by late Dr B.V Raman. Now days the computerized astrological software’s give ready made bala charts, which can be used effectively.
There are methods given in Jaimini system and Nadi system to know the strength of planets in transit and their effects.
The most important transits are those of slow moving planets, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. This is because the effect of Saturn lasts from 2-1/2 years to 7 years, those of Jupiter are annual and those of Mars are for 1/1/2 to 6 months (Mars some times becomes stationery in one star for months). All the three have direct and retrograde motion which has to be taken into account before pronouncing a judgment.
