Vedas are the ancient hymns of India. They contain the wisdom f the universe. There is no other form of teaching which contains this kind of wisdom.  The Vedas are not man made. They came from God directly. God is full of knowledge and man is with no knowledge.


The Vedas teach that Knowledge itself is god or God is complete knowledge. This is said in the Sanskrit verse as:

 
POORNASYA POORNAM IDAM
POORNAT POORNAM UDACHYATEY
POORNASYA POORNAMAADAYA
POORNA MEVAYA AVASISHYATEY

Meaning that which are complete remains complete even when some part is taken away from it and also when a part is added to it.

The example of a Zero is cited as 0+0 = 0 and 0-0= 0 the zero remaining as one thing only at all times. Similarly God creates yet he is complete and when creation merges in him yet he is complete. Vyasa the great sage took the responsibility of compiling the Vedas. He made 4 Vedas out of the knowledge available at his time and got to be known as Veda Vyasa.

He made some of the allied subjects as limbs of Vedas. These are siksha, chandas, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Jyoyisha and Kalpa. Of these Jyotisha is astrology and because it is a part of Vedas it is also called Vedic astrology to differentiate it from other forms of astrology like Greek, Chaldean and Egyptian origin.

What differentiates Vedic astrology from other forms is, it is Nirayana or shift removed method. The western astrology is based on the moving zodiac where as the Vedic astrology is based on fixed zodiac
When did the shift begin is a matter of dispute still. How ever the Vedic scholars have done a lot of research and given us parameters by which the correct forecast can be made for a horoscope.

Vedic astrology is very elaborate and whole lot of literature in Sanskrit and translated into Indian and English languages are available for the student

In India many universities have included Vedic astrology for graduate and post graduate courses; besides many private institutions also teach Vedic astrology.

The traditional Guru-sishya parampara method is also still in vogue.
