Vedic seers put Guru a step above God. This is because without the help of a true Guru who has realized his self, God cannot be found. This is the reason for the Vedic chant which says:
“GURUR BRAHMA, GURUR VISHNU, GURUR DEVO MAHESWARAHA
GURU SAKSHAT PARABRHMAM TASMY SRI GURUVEY NAMAHA”
This means that Guru represents all gods. Guru is the almighty Brahman who presides every where.
When such great importance is attached to Guru it would not be possible to find a real and true Guru without the grace of God. So the first point is regular prayers to God to give a guru who will guide us.
In course of the journey through time, the life or the individual goes through many bodies or incarnations. When he keeps praying continuously a time comes when the grace of a guru will be on him.
Vedic astrology helps us to locate this particular period or incarnation when a person is likely to meet his Guru. In Sanskrit Guru means one who takes us out of darkness or out of the illusion called Maya.
Among the planets Jupiter is called Guru. He is supposed to be the teacher and guide to “Devas” or beings of heaven. So in a horoscope Guru symbolizes wisdom, learning and a teacher who would guide.
The 5th house of a horoscope indicates the merits of the previous incarnations. The 9th indicates the charity of a person. Jupiter aspecting or occupying 5th/9th house or be in the ascendant or associated with the ascendant lord gives a clue to getting a Guru in this life. Secondly Jupiter should become functional benefic to that horoscope.
Jupiter when placed in a quadrant which happens to be any of his houses, or his exaltation house
Causes one yoga called Hamsa yoga. When the ascendant lord gets placed in 5th /9th of such a Jupiter the person is sure to get a true guru and he also may become one.
One more important aspect is when a person gets a true Guru his quest will be God and not any mundane facilities or enjoyments. In such a case he will have to renounce the world and do penance for attaining god. This brings in the combination of Sanyasa yoga or yoga to become a renunciate.
Here the astrologer’s skill in interpretation becomes very important to differentiate between the several Daridra yogas (yogas for poverty) and sanyasa yoga because both have no worldly goods.
On the other hand along with Sanyasa yoga several Raja yogas will be found making that person a pontiff withal regal paraphernalia. In such horoscopes invariably Parijata yoga is found which gives patronage from rulers of that time.
